I’ve seen a number of people claim that the more you publish, the more Medium’s algorithm likes you… but I’ve never seen any concrete proof of that. I think the notion comes from the fact that search engines favor you if you publish more, but Medium distribution isn’t based on search, it’s based on curation and followers.

My own experience has been that I get the most reads (and the most money) when I post my most value-giving work. However it is difficult for me to tell how much love I’m getting from Medium because about 70–80% of my views come from SEO. It’s the remaining 20–30% that actually bring me money though, because those come from my curated pieces that actually get read by members.

Something I didn’t get into in this article (because it’s a whole other can of worms) is the paradox of writing search-optimized posts on Medium. On one hand it’s very easy to rank for search because of Medium’s high domain authority. On the other hand, it feels like wasted effort because you only get paid when members read your content.

I have posts that get thousands of monthly reads and only earn me pocket change. Those are okay for list building, but getting the same readership from members would make a world of difference.

In your case I doubt that reducing to 1–2 posts per week will hurt you, especially if the posts you do publish are more helpful, longer, and (most importantly) get curated. You can also compensate for publishing less by promoting more, i.e. get more active on social media, email your followers, and so on.
