It only took eight separate attempts for me to begin wrapping my brain around Javascript.

After doing a lot of research and copy and pasting a lot of code I’m reasonably certain that my app idea is both craftable and fairly basic. I think I managed find all the pieces of code I’ll need to make it do what I want, but I lack the knowledge to cobble the parts together.

Enter online courses.

I probably go through at least thirty hours of video training a month in total — I’m always trying to learn more. Usually it’s SEO, WordPress, and other digital marketing related courses, but I’m happy to expand my repertoire to include some more coding classes.

Now that Javascript doesn’t resemble gobbledygook in my mind anymore, I’m actually rather enjoying working with it. HTML and CSS are more intuitive, but all they do is create structure and color and a little movement and morphing. Javascript is what brings the functionality into websites and apps, and there’s a lot of power in a few lines of js when properly written.

Here’s what I remember from today:

Variables always start with letters, or $ signs or underscores. However they can include numbers throughout after the first character. They’re case sensitive, and certain “reserve words” can’t be used as variables.
